FAQ

How do you ride dinosaurs in Prehistoric Farm?
Keep a dinosaur's belly above half full so it keeps growing; once it is fully grown, hop on and ride it. There is no separate taming step, saddle item or level gate — growth is the only barrier.
What growth stage can you ride?
The video-verified rule is the Elder stage — 'if you can ride it, it has finished growing.' One fan site claims the Adult stage is enough, which contradicts the footage; the safe assumption is Elder.
Can dinosaurs replace boats?
Yes — an aquatic dinosaur can replace your boat on sea trips. The expired SORRYFORDELAYS code rewarded exactly that, and GameRant's guide confirms aquatic mounts.
Why has my dinosaur stopped growing?
Almost always the belly meter: below half full, growth stalls. Buy food with coins and keep feeding — costs rise as dinosaurs reach Elder stage.

What unlocks riding?

The official How To Play text states the whole rule: “Keep your dino’s belly over half full so it keeps growing. Once it’s grown, hop on and ride your partner dino around the islands!” Riding in Prehistoric Farm is a growth gate, not a taming minigame — no saddles, no level requirements, no unlock quest. Your job is simply to raise the dinosaur to full size.

How do growth stages work?

Dinosaurs progress from Newborn (fresh from the hatchery — see the egg guide) through intermediate growth to Elder. Two mechanics matter:

  • The belly meter is the throttle. Below half full, growth pauses entirely. Food costs coins, and per playthrough footage the cost rises as a dinosaur approaches Elder — a fully-stocked herd is a real line item in the money guide.
  • Elder is the ride threshold. The community wiki’s video-verified rule puts it plainly: “An Elder is big enough to hop on and ride… if you can ride it, it has finished growing.” A competitor site claims “Adult” is enough — that claim contradicts the footage, so aim for Elder.

Which dinosaurs are worth riding?

Every fully-grown dinosaur is rideable per the official description, but practical differences exist — reported by the community and not yet lab-tested, so treat the specifics as consensus rather than gospel:

  • Velociraptor — cited as the fastest mount for island hopping.
  • T-Rex and Spinosaurus — cited as the best long-trip mounts; both sit at the top of our best dinosaurs ranking.
  • Aquatic dinosaurs — replace your boat outright for sea travel (confirmed by GameRant and the old SORRYFORDELAYS code reward).
  • Flying dinosaurs — added in Update 1 via the Sky Spires quest line per video titles; unverified until documented.

The full species roster with rarities lives in the dinosaur list.

Tips for the road to your first ride

  1. Hatch early, not perfectly. Your first dinosaur does not need to be optimal — it needs to exist. The starter-island loop in the beginner guide gets you a hatchling in 15-30 minutes.
  2. Budget food before hatching more. A stalled herd eats coins; sequence your hatches.
  3. Use incubation downtime. While one egg warms (2:30-5:00 observed), dig toward the next set — the digging guide keeps that time productive.
  4. Bankroll with codes. The current codes batch covers food, the Bronze shovel and half a boat before you dig a single fossil.
