FAQ

How does the dig meter work in Prehistoric Farm?
Hold the shovel on a dig site and a meter sweeps across the bar. Release while the pointer is inside the green zone for a better find — perfect center releases get announced on screen and yield the best results.
Where are the dig sites in Prehistoric Farm?
All dig sites are on the fossil islands you sail to from the home island — the spawn island has none. The starter islands are Cambrian and Devonian; Triassic and Jurassic lie farther out, gated by shovel tier and boat size.
Do dig sites glow at night for a reason?
Dig sites visibly glow at night, which makes them easier to spot — a navigation aid. No source confirms night digging improves loot; treat it as visibility only.
Can a dig return nothing?
Yes — digs can return a fossil, a 'No fossil' result, coins, or buried treasure. Duplicates are normal since sets need specific fossils; keep spares until the set is complete, then sell for 5-10 coins each.

How does the dig timing meter work?

The official How To Play text says it directly: “Grab your shovel and hold down on a dig site. Let go when the meter is in the green for a better find!” The mechanic is a release-timing check, not a reaction minigame — the sweeping bar slows down enough that a deliberate release lands in the green consistently once you have seen two or three cycles.

Perfect releases — dead center in the green — get announced on screen, and community footage of full playthroughs shows noticeably better hauls from green-zone digging than from spam-releasing, though no official odds table exists.

What can each dig return?

Every dig resolves into one of four outcomes, verified across full-guide playthrough footage:

  • A fossil — the outcome you are hunting; each island period yields fossils for specific species.
  • Coins — small direct payouts.
  • Buried treasure — rarer bonus finds.
  • “No fossil” — a whiff; the site can be re-dug.

Duplicates are part of the loop: a Cambrian set needs 6 fossils, and you will pull repeats. The in-game fossil menu tracks each set (“3/6”, then “Ready to extract DNA”) — that tracker is your real progress bar, not your coin counter.

Which island should you dig on?

Dig sites live only on the fossil islands off spawn. The verified island chain is Cambrian → Devonian → Triassic → Jurassic, with Cretaceous appearing in the in-game period list. Access is gated by shovel tier first (the Bronze shovel at 2,500 coins unlocks Devonian) and boat size second. The full unlock chain with prices is in the islands guide, and every shovel tier is listed in the shovel guide.

Night digging deserves a mention: per playthrough footage, dig sites glow after dark, which makes them trivially easy to spot from your boat. Use night runs to scout fresh sites; just do not expect better loot — no source documents a night bonus.

How do you dig faster and smarter?

  • Green-zone every release. It is the only confirmed quality lever you control. Practice the rhythm on starter sites before pushing deeper islands.
  • Pop a 2x Luck potion before a digging session. Codes like CWAURA hand out 30-minute 2x Luck potions — activate right before you land on an island, not in the menu. Check the codes page for the current batch.
  • Complete sets, do not chase coins. Sets become eggs, eggs become rideable dinosaurs — the actual economy driver (see the money guide).
  • Bring duplicates home anyway. Spare fossils sell for 5-10 coins each at the end of a run — weak, but it adds up while you wait on the last piece of a set.

Once a set reads “Ready to extract DNA”, stop digging that species and sail home — the next step is Dr. Ivy at the DNA Lab, covered in the DNA restoration guide. New players should also skim the beginner guide for the full loop, and the dinosaur list to see what each set eventually hatches into.
