The island chain, verified
Prehistoric Farm organizes its world by geological period, and the boat is how you move between them. The verified chain from playthrough footage and the in-game period list:
| Island | Access gate | What it yields |
|---|---|---|
| Cambrian | Free starter boat | First fossil sets (Hallucigenia, Pikaia and other Cambrian species — 6-fossil sets) |
| Devonian | Bronze shovel (2,500 coins) | Devonian sets incl. Tiktaalik |
| Triassic | Boat size + shovel progression | Deeper-period sets |
| Jurassic | Boat size + shovel progression | Large-species sets |
| Cretaceous | Listed in-game, unvisited on record | Undocumented |
| Sky Spires | Update 1 flying-dinosaur quest (video-reported) | Unverified |
The spawn island itself has no dig sites — it hosts your ranch, the DNA Lab, the hatchery and the shovel seller. Every dig happens offshore; the digging guide covers the on-site technique.

How boats and gates actually interact
Two separate gates confuse new players:
- The shovel gates dig areas. Sail anywhere you like — without the right tier, dig sites on advanced islands will not work for you. Buy the Bronze (2,500) before the boat; see the shovel guide.
- The boat gates distance. The free starter boat comfortably reaches the first fossil island (a short sail per playthrough footage). The 4,000-coin upgrade extends your range toward Triassic and Jurassic waters.
One honest gap: full boat-tier pricing beyond the first upgrade has not been published by any verifiable source. When we confirm the rest of the ladder we will extend the table here and note it in the update log.

What else is out on the water?
The official Explore list names three offshore activities beyond digging:
- Fishing and diving — “Fish the open sea and dive for rare catches.” Income is weak per playthrough footage (about 5-10 coins a fish) but it fills incubator downtime; more in the money guide.
- The Sunken Grotto — “Sneak into the Sunken Grotto to steal sea reptile eggs.” A stealth area; the eggs’ results are undocumented (see the egg guide).
- The giant Mosasaurus — “Team up with other players to take down the giant Mosasaurus with spears!” A co-op ocean boss. We have a dedicated boss page planned; until then the dinosaur list covers it in the roster context.
Update 1 reportedly added the Sky Spires quest (flying dinosaurs, needs the fishing rod and Silver shovel per video titles) and an underwater biome — both remain unverified until we capture footage.

Which island should you go to right now?
Use this decision path: if you cannot yet finish a Cambrian set, stay close and dig (starter island chain in the beginner guide). If Cambrian sets feel routine, buy the Bronze shovel and move to Devonian. If you are shopping for your next big dino instead, the best dinosaurs page ranks which targets are worth the deeper voyages — and the active codes batch can bankroll the boat upgrade in one redemption.
